Substraction is an alternative, instrumental rock band based in Antwerp (Belgium), consisting of five enthusiastic young minds, influenced by Rock, Pop, Hardrock & Psychedelica. The band started in 2007 when they were known as “Sa.Le”. The music they performed then was strongly influenced by Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. After numerous rehearsals in a cold, humid garage in Wilrijk, the two guitarists, Yorick L’Eau and Jeroen Aerts, and drummer Tars Vermorgen decided to start something completely different. In the spring of 2008 they began to explore the exciting world of instrumental music and so Substraction was born. With new musical ambitions came a new environment, as the band stumbled upon a nice, cosy & warm chalet in the small village of Lint (Antwerp). After several days in their new rehearsal-room, the band was enriched with a new member. Max Van Sande, a longtime friend of Yorick & Jeroen, brought along his keyboard and laptop and raised the music to a next level, with beautiful piano, soundscapes and vivid samples. A few months later, when William Sanders joined them on bass, the band was finally ready to take off on a musical journey.
Substraction's music is a quest to create a unique and distinct sound in the oversaturated musical landscape of today. It’s a quest to find an identity that will still grow and evolve. Ultimately, the sound of each composition is the result of the way each band member projects his musical thoughts onto the band as a whole. This is clearly resembled in the songs, each having a distinct musical flavour. While one moment the music guides you into a world of tranquility, the next it can be a “Wall of Sound” that smashes into your face like a hurricane.
If there are some names that can be used to describe Substraction, it will be these: “Sigur Rós, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Tool, EF, Pearl Jam & Alice in Chains”.
